Publisher's Synopsis
This volume of specially commissioned papers by historical geographers explores spatial variations in mortality, fertility, marriage and migration in a variety of European societies from the Middle Ages to the recent past. The authors both explain the nature of local and regional demographic change and consider the often taxing methodological problems of interpreting data drawn from a variety of questionable sources. The book is divided into three sections, each with its own introduction by Richard Smith, fully referenced, and illustrated where appropriate with maps and diagrams.
