Published in 1842, it is a work of prose poetry about the protagonist, Chíchikov, who buys dead souls to enrich himself. He buys dead souls because he can get them for less money, which allows him to increase his wealth and thus his social position.Together with his coachman and a servant they undertake a journey in their troika through the vast territories of vast Russia, stopping in cities and villages with the intention of buying souls, dead souls.
