Ce sont les pyrites (sulfures) qui sont le plus répandues. Le minerai est grillé à l'air pour éliminer une partie du soufre une première fusion sépare environ la moitié du fer qui passe dans les scories de la matte sulfure double de cuivre et de fer déjà plus riche en cuivre que le minerai. La mème opération est recommencée plusieurs fois jusqu'à ce qu'une dernière fusion oxvdante élimine le soufre et donne le cuivre brut.
