He begins the day he was born, helped to come into the world by Dr. Chillip, when his father had already passed away. Clara was her mother's name, and her babysitter's name too, although this is called in the whole story by her family name Pegotty. Betsy Trotwood is the aunt of Copperfield's father, and she visits Clara on the day David is born, hoping to help her raise the baby if she is a girl, however, she leaves disappointed to see that he is a boy.Clara remarries when Copperfield is about seven years old, with Mr. Murdstone, a severe guy whose occupation in life seems to be marrying young women with money, and then imposing his severe regime on him, which had sad consequences for Copperfield and his mother. While his mother's wedding and honeymoon is taking place, David is sent to Yarmouth, to live a season with Pegotty's family, humble fishermen who live in a boat. There David meets his first childhood love: Emily.Clara is unhappy in her life, not only because of the Murdstone regime, but this is reinforced by his sister, who moves to live with them to help her run the house, although in reality she takes all the powers of direction, reducing Clara to a simple tenant without voice or vote. They get married, and David leaves the legal profession to be a writer.
