Die kapitalistische Menschheit hat nun schon verschiedliche Jahrhunderte lang Mehrwerth producirt und ist allmalig auch dahin gekommen, sich uber dessen Entstehung Gedanken zu machen. Die erste Ansicht war die aus der unmittelbaren kaufmannischen Praxis entspringende: der Mehrwerth entstehe aus einem Aufschlag auf den Werth des Produkte. Sie herrschte unter den Merkanti listen, aber schon James Steuart sah ein, dass dabei, was der eine gewinnt, der andre nothwendig verlieren muss. Trotzdem spukt diese Ansicht noch lange fort, namentlich unter Socialisten; aus der klassischen Wissenschaft wird sie aber verdrangt durch A. Smith.
