A figurehead no longer, the Mother program takes complete control of the Federation and her agenda is the extermination of undesirables. The Federal Fleets have lost control of the Schrödinger Asteroid in the face of a fierce Horde counterattack but vow to get it back with all its riches and secrets. But that's okay. Mother and the Party have someone new to blame for the problems the powerful create: Mutants. Sometimes, losing is better than winning in the universe evil people are creating. The Federation continues to tear itself apart as solar systems cancel their ancient alliances with the human ruled nation. Setbacks only make the Mother program more powerful, that is until she's overthrown for a king. But no matter what, the Mother program has a sinister surprise in store for the eight hundred billion citizens of the Federation: preprogrammed apocalypse. The three year countdown will continue to wind down to zero whether Mother is in power over the galaxy's largest civilization, or not. Unless someone stops Mother's virus, the missiles will launch, and the only person in the known universe who knows of it is shady Gilladian Governor, Severin, who is using it for personal gain. But, there are those who would stop the doom, reverse the Federation's seeming unstoppable descent into insanity and death. One rebel fleet, an alliance of planets, and an outlawed political party, they must team up to stop the apocalypse, and restore democracy to the Federation. The Federation civil war is on!
