It allows you to look objectively at what you have just written. It lets you process your feelings, actions, and emotions be it from a person, place, thing, or situation that triggers you in some way, be it good or bad. It is good to get these things out, so it doesn't get bottled up or buried and explode from all the pent up and hidden emotions, pain, anger, or frustration. All those things, negative stuff we collect either on a conscious or unconscious level. Best of all it is private, and you do not have to share it with anyone unless you choose to. Journaling is also a good way to document progress, allowing you to get the bigger picture. It is an effective tool, a road map. You can reflect back and see where you have been so that you can then look forwards and see where you want to go. It allows you forward thinking. It is a tool that allows you to dream, create, and motivate... But more than that it is a tool to propel you forwards. You will find this a very helpful tool. Writing these down is not only for your own knowledge and clarity which is vitally important, but the act of writing reinforces the message that this is what you want, and this is how you are going to get it. Your brain by writing is using both your creative thinking mind and your analytical mind by thinking of what it is you are creating, imagining and then breaking it down into steps, analyzing how you are going to go about achieving it. By picking up a pen or pencil and writing it your tactile senses and your motor, mechanical functions are activated. You now have gotten your whole mind and body, every cell, every particle of your being on board and ready to engage and put it in motion.
