Excerpt from Dos Tratados Históricos Tocantes al Cardenal Ximénez de Cisneros
Pareció oportuno que la sociedad DE bibliófilos espanoles se asociase también, de la manera que ella puede hacerlo, a la conmemoración cuatro veces centena ria de Cisneros. Justificábalo el haber sido el gran Carde nal, no sólo paladín y propulsor incansable de la cultura española (como lo están diciendo a voces, entre tantas otras obras insignes, la fundación y organización de la Universidad de Alcalá y la publicación de la Biblia Poli glota Complutense), sino también Mecenas ilustre de los sabios, gran protector del naciente arte de la imprenta, y por los muchos libros de varia índole que mandó impri mir, costeó y difundió, el primero de los Bibliófilos es pañoles.
Si bien la bibliografia cisneriana es abundantísima y son muy numerosas las obras desde el mismo siglo XVI al XX enderezadas a narrar la vida, enaltecer las empre sas y cantar las glorias de Cisneros, todavía se hallaban entre los fondos de nuestras Bibliotecas algunos escritos con cuya publicación, al par que se aportarían nuevos documentos para ilustrar la vida del gran español, conti nuaríase la no interrumpida tradición de nuestra socie dad, de seguir sacando de la oscuridad inéditos manus critos, ne majoram scripta perenni. Tal es la razón de ser de este volumen XLI de la sociedad DE bibliófilos espanoles, en que se dan a la estampa dos tratados históricos tocantes al Cardenal Cisneros.
