For a range of stitch patterns that are done in a similar manner, the term "brioche" is used in general. The two stitches that make up all of these patterns are a slipped stitch and a yarn-over, which are knit together on the return row, according to Barbara G. Walker in her book "Treasury of Knitting Patterns." Although this particular pattern is stated as having two rows, it actually only has one row repeat, with the first row only being done at the start of the pattern. Numerous terms, including Double Brioche, Waffle Brioche, and Syncopated Brioche, are used to describe brioche stitches.
