Publisher's Synopsis
Evicted from their Devon home in the autumn of 1850, John Price is forced to take to the road with his wife Mary and their two young children, one cold winter's night finding them trudging the lanes of Gloucestershire in search of shelter. Their meagre resources exhausted, John reluctantly decides he has no option but to leave his family at the gates of the Workhouse, finding work at the Grange, the home of Major Carruthers. Moving into a tied cottage, the lives of the Price family become caught up in the fortunes and misfortunes of the Carruthers and their near neighbours, Sir Ian Stuart and his wife Lady Margaret. But the many lies and the violent deaths John witnesses over the years are to make him rue the day the Major took him in.
