La vie de La Fayette est un cas psychologique � �l�ments tr�s simples et a dur�e exceptionnellement longue. Les donn�es, peu vari�es, sont, de tr�s bonne heure, actuelles et enti�res dans le sujet � �tudier, et elles sont assez riches pour fournir un d�veloppement de soixante-dix-sept ann�es sans se renouveler et sans s'alt�rer autrement que par leur �volution m�me, qui se partage en deux parties. D'abord elles offrent une p�riode ascendante de dix sept ann�es, depuis une premi�re crise d'enthou siasme � l'�ge de dix-huit ans (8 ao�t jusqu'� une crise de d�pression morale le 19 ao�t 1792 ensuite, apr�s un assez brusque rel�vement, une p�riode d'immobilit� relative de quarante-deux ans. Ces phases se distinguent nettement; les analyser c'est beaucoup moins en d�crire la courbe que sui vre une ligne droite qui, en deux ou trois endroits se brise.
Un homme de sentiment, jet� par le d�sir de l'ac tion au milieu des r�volutions les plus d�cisives qu'ait enregistr�es l'histoire, et d'abord favoris� d'une invraisemblable continuit� de succ�s, puis, en une heure, rebut� et pass� � l'�tat de souvenir et de type h�ro�que; un esprit naturellement inapte aux combi naisons politiques, port� par les circonstances vers le premier r�le dans l'�tablissement des deux plus grandes r�publiques modernes, et s'y donnant, par les cons�quences m�mes de cette incapacit�, une attitude qui a servi pendant un si�cle de mod�le � la classe d'hommes la plus consid�rable issue de la secousse de 1789, tandis que des g�nies politiques comme Mirabeau, Danton et Bonaparte n'ont agi sur leur temps qu'en passant; une volont� m�dio cre, born�e, r�duite aux coups de t�te de l'impul sion psychique, provoquant des mouvements sociaux incroyables d'�lan et de r�action, mais impuissante � diriger sa personnalit� m�me voil� ce qu'offre La Fayette pour une �tude de psychologie biogra phique.
