Excerpt from Correspondance du Maréchal de Vivonne Relative A l'Expédition de Messine, Vol. 2: Publiée pour la Société de l'Histoire de France; 1676-1678
Au cours du printemps de l'année 1674, la situation du royaume de France ne laissait pas d'ètre grave. Louis XIV assistait à l'ècroulement du système d'alliances que la diplomatie de Lionne avait élaboré contre la Hollande. Tous les alliés avaient à se plaindre du roi et se sentaient dupés. Les uns après les autres, ils passaient à l'ennemi et se déclaraient partisans de Guillaume d'orange. L'angle terre avait commencé. Charles II, contraint par le Parle: ment de se dégager des promesses faites à Louis XIV, fit la paix, le 19 février, avec la Hollande. Les évèques de Munster et de Paderborn, les archevèques de Mayence et de Cologne suivirent et traitèrent avec les Provinces - Unies. Le duc de Brunswick - Lunebourg, le 20 juin, l'électeur de Brandebourg, le 1 juillet, rompirent à leur tour avec Louis XIV. A la France, entourée d'une multitude d'en nemis, tous intéressés à sa défaite il ne restait guère comme alliés que l'électeur de Bavière, soudoyé par Louis XIV, et le roi de Suède; encore ce dernier n'était - il engagé que sous certaines conditions à une action com mune. Ainsi isolée en l'europe, la France avait à défendre presque partout ses frontières, dans les pays-bas, sur le haut et le bas Rhin et en Roussillon, Où l'espagne l'atta quait.
