When her baby brother dies, eleven-year-old Samantha Moss' life goes from awesome to horrible. Her best friend suddenly stops talking to her, her parents won't allow her to leave the house or even go to school, and she has no one to talk to about little Matthew's passing. But Sam's had enough of being a physical and emotional prisoner, and plans a jail break. After a daring escape from her bedroom, Sam makes a surprise visit to her school during recess. But her hopes for a happy return are quickly shattered, as none of the kids will talk to her. Except one kid. The mean one. And Sam can only be pushed so far. Now, Sam has to deal with her school principal about a schoolyard fight, her parents about the escape from home, and still - her best friend refuses to speak to her. But why? Everyone is so caught up with their own pain, Sam's feelings often go ignored or even met with anger. But Sam's heart hurts from her brother's death, too - and she's going to deal with it in her own way, whether they like it or not.
