Excerpt from Cooperative Economic Insect Report, Vol. 3: February 27, 1953

As the storm center neared the Lake Region on the 20th, thunder storms and heavy rains occurred in the Mid-west and South. Sections of Alabama, Mississ ippi, and Louisiana. Were struck by tornadoes or severe wind squal'is. In northern Alabama, one person was killed, at least 7 persons injured and sev eral homes were damaged or destroyed. The heavy: rainfall caused some minor flooding in Southern Wisconsin.

The week was unseasonably cold in the southwest where some station averages for the week were 10 degrees below normal. Some tender vegetables were nipped in the lower portions of California's Central Valley when a minimum temperature of 22 degrees was recorded in the Fresno area, on the 2131 unheate citrus was damaged in the Los Angeles area and tender vegetables and early -set fruit in the San Diego area also suffered some damage.
