The atti tude of the American people toward education is evidenced by this general establishment of schools and the liberal provision for their sup port. The in?uence of this attitude on educa tion itself has been twofold: its function and scope have been enlarged; its intrinsic value and prestige have been questioned. The inadequacy of the old conception of education to meet the demands and the doubts has become such a prolific source of disquietude and dis satisfaction that ere long a new one must needs be constructed. The new standard, with its adaptation to social and economic conditions, bids fair to be the dominant factor in the social product of the future.
