Fr. Augustin Baker is famous for his Sancta Sophia, Holy Wisdom, from which this work on contemplation is taken. This work begins by proving that contemplation is for everyone. Indeed the joys of contemplation are a foretaste of the Beatific Vision in Heaven, and our occupation in eternal happiness there. Anyone who wishes to live a life of true prayer is recommended to acquire and study this holy work, and begin on the road to Heaven through contemplation. This work contains much practical advice for all Christians, who wish to truly pray. St. Alphonsus writes: "a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery." Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: "There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7).
