ESTC queries: 'No more published?' In fact, in the final piece 'To the Public' the author frankly states that the paucity of subscribers, their diminishing number, has forced him to conclude the exercise. At the beginning the anonymous author proclaims his intention of erecting 'a perpetual monument of morality.' Aimed at 'the middling sort' it is full of advice to young women, how to protect their virtue, and much family politics - e.g dealing with the extravagance of one's wife. Lavater gets a look-in. Various correspondents write to 'Mr. Monitor' for advice, or to rail at him, with fictitious names: a bit like a modern message board. There is much verse, some of it by women, sometimes 'by a lady', others signed with just a Christian name. Rare: BL only in ESTC.
