Several thousand Irish placenames are recorded, many of them for the first time.;The book comprises a long essay on geology, landscape formation, archaeology and history of the region, and a gazetteer covering the area townland by townland, with detailed notes on local history (e.g. of the great pre-Famine landlords and subsequent changes in ownership) and English translations of all the Irish placenames. It won a 'highly commended' citation in the British Carto-graphical Design Awards for 1992.
