Publisher's Synopsis

Think of the First World War and it immediately conjures up images of trench warfare and the Western Front, but this book focuses on a less obvious subject - the campaign in German East Africa (or Tanganyika as it was later to become) which today, with Zanzibar, forms Tanzania. This little book, packed with illustrations from the author's collection, tells the story of the East African campaign in which a small German force of about 3,000, augmented by 7,000 Askaris, outran and outwitted the Allies from the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 to the Armistice in 1918. Indeed, this was the only theatre of the war where the Germans were undefeated, making Major General von Lettow-Vorbeck a national hero.
