Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Comparative View of the Public Finances: From the Beginning to the Close of the Late Administration
This Work was published about two years ago, with the View of continuing my account of the finances to the close of the late ad ministration; but being written immediately after the resignation of the minister, it was hardly possible that it should comprehend the whole of his financial Operations, and therefore my chief object in the present edi tion has been, to introduce such further statements as should serve to give a more enlarged View of them, and to shew in its full extent the distress which they have en tailed upon this Country. The immense load Of funded debt which had been left without any adequate provision, has in the course of last year required an addition of more than two millions to the permanent taxes of the kingdom; and the other burdens which have been lately accumulated appear to be so much the consequences of a former expenditure, that the term which has elapsed since the late] Chancellor of the Exchequer retired from power, may in a great measure be considered as forming a part of his ad ministration.
