Publisher's Synopsis

One of Henry James's earlier stories, this novella is at once a romance, a travelogue, and a psychological introspection. Mr. Brooke, an American on vacation in Italy, finds two travel partners in Milan: fellow American Mark Evans and his daughter Charlotte. During their tour of the great works of Italian art, Brooke realizes he is attracted to Charlotte and he reveals his feelings to her in Venice. She remains reserved, however, and the trip continues, but an awkward incident during an excursion provides an unexpected twist that will not be resolved until the group reaches Rome. The themes that James experimented with in his later novels and stories, such as the contrast between American and European society and the evolution of the modern American woman, are intuitively present in this engaging book.
