The counsel for the prisoners have presented a number of points on which they have asked the Court to instruct you, and as the ruling of the Court upon these points will, to a great de gree, control the application of the evidence to which you have listened so patiently for the last three weeks, nearly; I shall first address myself to the Court with the View of aiding, as far as is in my power, to a proper understanding of the law or questions of law involved in these points; and then it will be my purpose to address myself, specially, to you, in order that I may, if pos sible, aid you in the application of the evidence to the law or questions involved in this most important case.
