After you've left home, can you ever really return? This is the thought I've had playing in my head over-and-over as I drive home from the airport. I've been out of the country for the last twenty-five years. Coming home was made more difficult by that fact. I wasn't even sure I was going to be able to. Leaving Russia was harder than I thought it would be. You would think being born and raised an American citizen would have counted for something, and in the end it did, but it cost me more than I ever thought possible.Here I am, though, driving through the night to get back home. I could've flown in closer to home, but I like to drive. It clears my head. So, when I landed in Boston, I rented a car and decided to drive back to my sleepy little hometown on the other side of the country. My sister, Lynn, thought I was crazy, but I needed the time to clear my head and process the shit storm that was my life, especially the last six months.What was I going to tell everyone about where I've been, and why I hadn't come home before now? Did I want to tell them anything, or was it better to just pretend it never happened? Somewhere in the background, behind the passing semi-trucks and the white line on the road, the last twenty-five years of my life play out like a movie on the windshield in front of me. I can't decide if it's a horror movie or a Greek tragedy. One thing I know for sure is, the pain is real. It burns like a branding iron right over my heart.I know coming home, I will be safe, but for how long? My greatest fear is that my life for the past twenty-five years will collide with the life I want to build here, and the people that I love will be caught in the middle.
