El libro de Zacarías es el undécimo de los últimos profetas. Al igual que Ezequiel, Zacarías era de origen sacerdotal. Se describe a sí mismo (Zac 1:1) como "el hijo de Berequías". En Ed 5,1 y 6,14 se le llama "hijo de Iddo", que era propiamente su abuelo. Su carrera profética comenzó en el segundo año de Darío (520 a.C.), unos dieciséis años después del regreso del primer grupo del exilio.
El nombre de Zacarías es común en el Antiguo Testamento, y varios hombres recibieron este nombre en esa época. En el caso del profeta, el nombre es muy apropiado, ya que significa "Yahvé recuerda", porque los mensajes que anunció entre el 520 y el 518 a.C. decían que el pueblo seguía siendo elegido por Dios después de regresar del exilio.
El libro muestra que la salvación está al alcance de todos "Si andas en mis caminos y observas mis preceptos, tú también juzgarás mi casa y vigilarás mis atrios, y te daré libre acceso entre los que están aquí" (Zac. 3:7) Sin embargo, es importante señalar que no todas las personas se salvarán (teoría universalista), esto se debe a que la salvación es el plan del Señor para su pueblo, y para ello es necesario estar en la presencia del Señor, creer en él. La salvación no está ligada a opciones políticas o elitistas, por ejemplo, o a algo que fue simplemente un regimiento creado por manos humanas, leyes humanas.
El último capítulo habla del juicio sobre Jerusalén y de que el Señor es bueno, y quiere que todos lo conozcan y sigan sus estatutos. Por encima de la ley de los hombres está la ley de Dios, y para estar de acuerdo con ella debemos escuchar su palabra, escuchar a los profetas "Por tanto, diles: Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos: Volved a mí, dice el Señor de los ejércitos, y yo os devolveré otros, dice el Señor de los ejércitos" (Zac. 1:3).
El profeta que vivió en la misma época que Hageo, y un ejemplo de influencia política que fue superada por la voluntad soberana del Señor fue la liberación de Judá y Jerusalén de sus enemigos políticos. Este acontecimiento reforzó la predicación de Zacarías, que recordaba constantemente al pueblo que el Señor es soberano sobre toda la tierra, aunque las circunstancias digan que no lo es. Otro tema que el profeta aborda con audacia es el pasaje en el que advierte al pueblo sobre los falsos profetas y la desaprobación del Señor a los pastores que abandonan su rebaño "Ay del pastor que abandona su rebaño" (Zac 11,17).
El libro de Zacarías tiene un total de catorce capítulos. Anunciaba al pueblo que Dios lo ve todo, lo sabe todo, en todo momento. Las declaraciones del poder de Dios sobre el mundo enseñan que es Él quien determina lo que se hará a no, e incluso la vida de cada uno - esto no excluye la libertad de elección de las personas, incluso hay informes de personas que incluso con todo el cuidado del Señor se rebelaron - "Haré pasar la tercera parte por el fuego, y la purificaré como se purifica la plata, y la probaré como se prueba el oro; invocará mi nombre, y yo la oiré; diré, es mi pueblo, y dirá, el Señor es mi Dios" (Zac 13:9).
El Libro de Zacarías está dividido en dos partes: 1) Los capítulos 1 a 8 relatan las visiones y profecías que Dios dio a Zacarías, un profeta que estaba entre los israelitas que regresaron a Jerusalén del cautiverio en Babilonia. 2) Los capítulos 9 a 14 son una colección de mensajes sobre el rey elegido por Dios y el Día de Yahveh.
