He is soon reunited with his old comrade Harold Marr, a veteran of the trade war who fell on bad times. Together the marines must endure the harsh life of convicts pressed into military service as disposable soldiers, and along the way Samuel must turn a rag-tag crew of former gangers, disgraced enforcers, idealistic revolutionaries, and life bond defaulters into a fighting unit capable of winning their freedom.
