England. The winter of 1944. And as the last grim months of the Second World War grind to a close, three members of an Irish Republican unit - two brothers and their downtrodden sister, Kathleen are on the run, wanted for passing information onto the Germans, pursued by the "rat-catcher," a British Army officer with good reason to see them hang. But securing their capture proves to be hard. For in an attempt to meld into her surroundings, Kathleen happens upon a British Military Hospital recruiting young women to train for the nursing reserve, and who would suspect one of the white robed angels? No one it seems. And certainly not the badly injured patient to whom she grows deeply attached - Flight Lieutenant David Asher, a British pilot whom Kathleen nurses back from the brink. But how long will it be before Asher discovers the truth about his "angel," the secret which would mean Kathleen losing the man she loves and the whole new world which has opened up around her? And yet, with the "rat-catcher" moving in ever closer, she knows she stands to lose a whole lot more.
