As a Captain under Sir William Pepperell, he fought at the famous seige of Louisburg in 1745. His next military duty was in the French warin 1755, under Brig. Gen. Ruggles. Thus early in in the history of the country, Rugles and Gilbert cemented their friendship on the field of battle, which relation did not end until Gilbert became the leader and both found graves in the soil of New Scotland the French Arcadia.
