Publisher's Synopsis

Originally published in 1983, this is the first serious catalogue of Crusader coinage since Schlumberger (1878). It does not repreat the historical background information which can be found in Schlumberger, but concentrates on numismatic discussion, giving an up-to-date explanation of how the various series of coins are classified. It is primarily an essay on numismatic classification, accompanied by an inventory with maps of hoards ans site-finds from territory under Latin control (Aleppo or Bulgaria). There is also a concordance with Schlumberger's plates.;The book is a reference for identifying, dating and studying the many varieties of West European coins, gold bezants, helmet deniers of Antioch, early gros of Cyprus and deniers tournois of Frankish Greece, found in the Latin East, up to about 1400 AD.;This edition features 13 new plates to illustrate important accessions of Crusader coins by the Ashmolean Museum since 1983. A new feature is the inclusion at the end of most sections of a paragraph headed "Future research", offering a numismatist's assessment, for the benefit particularly of general historicans, of the state of enquiry.
