Publisher's Synopsis
Andrew's nine-to-five is death. When someone dies alone, it's his job to search their house and find out if they have any next of kin or enough money to cover their funeral. It's a grim job, but thankfully he has a loving family waiting for him when he gets home. At least, that's what he's told his co-workers. He didn't mean to get trapped in the lie, but over time it became comforting to escape into a life where he doesn't live alone, in a bedsit off the Old Kent Road, with only his Ella Fitzgerald records for company. But things have to change when new employee Peggy shakes Andrew out of his routine. She's a breath of fresh air, and Andrew finds himself drawn to her—the only problem is that Peggy has a spouse and two kids, and she thinks Andrew does too. Andrew is left with a choice: Does he tell the truth and start really living his life, but risk losing his friendship with Peggy, the first person he's made a connection with in years? Or will he keep up the façade, keeping himself isolated and alone, and end up suffering the same fate as all those people he's seen slip through the cracks?
