CLOAK AND DAGGER: MASQUERADE introduces some of the series's key characters--Azamaru, Bogart, Annabel, Terrel, Jekoyu, Brigadier Halifax, and Sonya. Bogart is an ace operative for the bad guys. Questions arise about his true loyalties and intentions, as he becomes entangled in the intrigues of the living mystery that is Azamaru. Is she a hero or a villain? Will her treachery serve the cause of the good guys or the bad guys, both or neither. A double agent of dubious loyalties to either side, Annabel gets grafted into the equation and pays a high price. Will she survive and become a hero, after all? Terrel presides as the commander of the bad guys' regional forces. But he remains unhappy with his superiors' demands and various issues related to his mandate. Jekoyu, in turn, wishes to reclaim her rightful place in Zalhambra's scheme of things as its Crowned Princess. First, though, she needs remove the pretender, Ixaharu-her identical twin sister. The process proves to be a little too much like playing chess against herself, except it is a death struggle. Or is it? Brigadier Halifax commands the good guys' regional counterintelligence forces. Even her rivals consider her brilliant, wise, cunning, and above reproach concerning her loyalties and competence. As she puzzles over the mysteries of Azamaru, she and Terrel play games with each other's forces. Then there is Sonya. She serves as the chief enforcer of the bad guys' regional forces. Most of her colleagues regard her as a bad girl with an attitude and an agenda. They fear her. Terrel wants to believe he controls her. He thinks he knows what her agenda is. But he remains reluctant to wager too much on the prospect that he might be right....
