Publisher's Synopsis

This text, intended for the clinician, researcher and scientist-practitioner, presents breakthrough findings and insights gleaned from clinics and laboratories in Australasia, Europe, Russia and the United States. This is the first volume to introduce findings using the dry float, a new form of restricted environmental stimulation (REST) combining features of the classic chamber and wet floatation methods.;Chapters focus on performance enhancement in the lab, as well as on diverse applications of REST, including its use on the athletic playing field, in stress management, in the treatment of habit disorders, insomnia, trichotillomania, premenstrual syndrome, eating disorders, and the production of food aversion in obesity cases.;The psychophysiological effects of alternative forms of REST on mood are discussed. Similarities and contrasts between REST and hypnotic phenomena are featured in several chapters. New evidence that floatation REST may be used to elicit hypnotic responsiveness to produce pain relief is presented. A chapter is devoted to providing the first findings on the immunological effects of REST. New theoretical conceptualizations of REST are also offered, as well as approaches to help people stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake. The clinical utility of REST in physical therapy and physical disabilities is also foreshadowed, and a REST prescription for the treatment of children with autism offers new hope.
