Publisher's Synopsis

A biography of the pioneering black feminist who founded the Notting Hill Carnival. Based on interviews and archival research, the text covers Jones's coming of age in Harlem, New York, involvement with the communist movement, extradition to Britain in 1955, and subsequent civil rights work. Jones founded the Carnival in 1959, to showcase the talents and culture of the Afro-Caribbean community. She also organised campaigns against the 1962 Immigration Act, the Vietnam War and the South African apartheid regime. Jones died penniless in 1964.
