Publisher's Synopsis
Underneath a park in Copenhagen, a former water reservoir has been transformed into a subterranean art space specialising in contemporary art. For over a decade, Cisternerne has received great national and international recognition for its series of large-scale exhibitions by artists such as Jeppe Hein, Tomás Saraceno, Superflex and Hiroshi Sambuichi. This book reveals the special venue and the opportunities it creates for art.
Cisternerne is the opposite of a white, climate-controlled art gallery. The former water reservoir is an attraction in itself, reminiscent of both gloomy catacombs and sunken cathedrals. Every year an artist is invited to create a site-specific art project. The underground architecture, climate and history become catalysts for the artists' visions; a very special all-embracing and sensual world emerges which is so specific to the location that it cannot be experienced anywhere else in the world.
