Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Cistercian Legends of the Thirteenth Century: Translated From the Latin

This change must be attributed of course in the first place to the great mercy of God, but in the second, to the virtue and benediction of the holy vestment, for according to the saying of the Fathers, the habit of the Monk has the -virtue of a second baptising, so that Henry, a Convert Brother, and Master of the Grange called Hart, once saw the Holy Ghost descending on the head of a Novice in the form of a dove, at the time when he made his vows.

It happens, however, often, that those who come to the Order, not burdened with any great sins, though they endure for awhile, yet in process of time become lukewarm, because their conscience does not accuse them, or perhaps they altogether fall away. The prophet truly says, God is terrible in His counsels over the children of men.
