Marcus Tullius} Cicero was born on the third day of J annary, bc. 106, at Arpinum, a town of Latium. His family was of equestrian rank. Marcus and his brother Quintus received the rudiments of their education in their father's house. When Marcus was about fourteen years oi age the brothers were taken to Rome, and placed under the best teachers in the capital. Among their instructors at this time was the poet Archias. After assuming the toga virilis at sixteen years, Marcus frequented the forum and heard all the great orators of the day. It was at this period that he learned the principles of Roman jurisprudence from Scaevola, the aqgur.
