Publisher's Synopsis

Brebner (1864-1922) was a British author of adventure and detective fiction. He was educated at King's College School and worked in the Share & Loan Dept of the Stock Exchange before embarking on his writing career, publishing his early novels under the name of Christian Lys. His 1899 'lost world' genre novel The Fortress of Yadasara (written as Lys) was praised by reviewers and was serialised in Italian and Spanish journals in the early 20th century. An American edition appeared in 1907 under Brebner's own name with the title The Knight of the Silver Star. One of his most popular creations was Professor of Philosophy Christopher Quarles who made his first appearance in Christopher Quarles: College Professor and Master Detective (1914). With the help of his granddaughter Zena, he aids Scotland Yard's Murray Wigan in solving a series of bizarre mysteries, his methods being somewhat akin to those of Sherlock Holmes. The Master Detective, a second collection of cases featuring Quarles, was published in 1916.
