One of the most beautiful German devotional books produced in the eighteenth century. Dedicated to Clemens August of Bavaria, Archbishop-Elector of Cologne (170061) by his cabinet secretary, Maria Kaukol (1688-1733) who supposedly oversaw all aspects of production; he collected the prayers used at court, engraved the text and decorations onto copper, and oversaw the small print run. The result is a luxury product, finely executed, with a variety of internal decoration including historiated initials, allegorical vignettes, biblical scenes, ornate head and tail pieces. Here in a pretty and personalised rococo binding and original slipcase.

FIRST EDITION, wholly engraved, calligraphic text, frontispiece, title-page, 8 section titles, profusely illustrated and decorated; slightly toned with the odd spot, ff. [146] engraved, with a few blanks at end, 8vo, late eighteenth-century German rococo binding of full red morocco, gilt, boards with ornate floral tooling, central crucifix motif, initials J.W.O and date 1770 embossed on upper cover, gilt edges, marbled endpapers; wanting the front free endpaper, slightly shaken with minor wear to extremities, with a well-preserved contemporary slipcase (blind tooled brown leather, paste paper-lined and blind embossed interior - a little bumped and chipped), very good
