Publisher's Synopsis

Just two of Wilson's gruelling expeditions to China resulted in over 65,000 plant specimens, and his search for the regal lily nearly cost him his life. It is therefore not surprising that he soon became known as "Chinese" Wilson.;Although there are few gardens today that do not contain at least one of his plant introductions, until now he has largely escaped the attention of the biographer. In this text his great-nephew uses Wilson's original journals, photographs and previously unpublished family correspondence to delve behind the glamour of the adventures of this legendary botanist. Complementing the story of his life is a brief account of his living legacy - the plants and trees for which he gave so much and which proved him to be one of the greatest plant hunters of all.
