1961: Finn lives with his mother in a working-class suburb of Oslo. Life is a constant struggle to make ends meet, and eventually they must advertise for a lodger. But when Ingrid Olaussen turns up, she is not there to rent the room, but to bring tumultuous news - Finn has a six-year-old half-sister, who is now coming to live with them... Soon, both half-sister Linda and lodger Kristian are ensconced within the flat. Irritated by Linda's strangeness, and enthralled by Kristian's bad language and Bakelite television, Finn must strive to find his place within this new family arrangement.
