Publisher's Synopsis
This book is the first in a lengthy series. It is the beginning story of Miss Ebbie Catherine Sullivan, a young girl growing up during The Great Depression in the fictional southern Alabama town of Charity Junction. As the story begins, she is twelve years old, precocious, inquisitive with a mind of her own. Miss Ebbie Catherine writes letters to the world from either her front porch swing or her feather bed, her hound dog Blue by her side. Her mother, Charity, is a mail order bride and yes, her Papa named the town after his beloved wife. Her father, Newt, is a shoemaker from up north. He advertised for a bride and Miss Charity answered the ad--and now they're all a family! There are social injustices and causes that disturb Miss Ebbie Catherine and so, at first glance one might think she is writing about her life in Charity Junction and her adventures with Blue. In part, she does write about all of it but there are deeply rooted issues that keep her up at night--she often says she's a "young girl in an old soul". She writes about The Great Depression, poverty, the mistreatment of the colored people, the horrors of the KKK, the Holocaust and much more! This series will continue throughout the character's lifetime.
