Publisher's Synopsis
The year 2016 marked the one hundred year anniversary of one of the most pivotal years in modern Irish history. Centenary documents the many commemorations held across Ireland and around the world in remembering the events of 1916. Some 3,500 events were staged between August 2015 and the end of 2016, probably the biggest series of public participation events in our history. What made these such a success was their openness, inclusivity and the mass public participation from the many diverse communities in commemorating the events of 1916. While the Easter Rising was certainly the primary focus, the commemorations included the First World War, the Irish Party, the role of women and acknowledging their contributions in the conflicts, labour, unionism north and south, farming and agricultural life and a myriad of events that led to the foundation of the Irish state. Beautifully illustrated with photographs and newly created artworks inspired by 1916, this book highlights the key events from the year and shares the stories of the participants and those involved in the planning and organising the 2016 commemorations. This commemorative issue is finished in a linen case with tricolour ribbon markers and will be a book to treasure and to gift to the next generation.
