In the aftermath of the Second World War, in an Italy wounded by the violence of the conflict, but projected towards its new republican history, Adolfo Omodeo collected his works about the Restoration period published in the years of his intense collaboration with Benedetto Croce's review La Critica. From the suggestions provided by that historiographical lesson derive the reflections contained in these pages: many ideas for rethinking research methods and practices, and above all a strong impulse to contaminate the theoretical elaborations with the social and political culture of a conscious contemporaneity.
