Publisher's Synopsis
A collaboration between a British sculptor and an Italian photographer. The work is about the "idea" of stone, its origins and history. It takes us to one of the great sources of our western culture and history - the part of the Alps where Rodin, Michelangelo and Canova quarried stone, and which is still used by sculptors today. The images and texts offer to unveil the quarries poetically, geologically and technologically, showing how time and man's intrusion have affected these landscapes. The book brings together colour photographs, Michelangelo's poems, texts from classical works on quarries and stone and an overview of Carrara's history by Stephen Cox.
