Publisher's Synopsis
Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. Central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era, he was a leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century. Carmilla is one of his best-known works and has been adapted numerous times to all kinds of media, including film, stage, radio, television, and, most recently, the Web. Narrated by a young woman who is preyed upon by Carmilla, a female vampire, the story is one of the early works of vampire fiction and predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by 26 years. The novella was first published as a serial in The Dark Blue and later in book form as part of In a Glass Darkly. This book is illustrated with drawings from both the original serialized publication and the book publication of the novella.
