Publisher's Synopsis
"In 1985, Russian boxer Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren, arrived in the United States with his wife, Olympic swimmer Ludmilla, and a team of Soviet and Cuban coaches. His manager, Nicolai Koloff, seizes every chance to highlight Drago's athleticism as a symbol of Soviet dominance. Former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, motivated by patriotism and a desire to prove himself, challenges Drago to an exhibition match. Rocky has doubts, but agrees to assist Creed prepare for the match.
During a press conference, anger flares between Creed's and Drago's camps. The boxing exhibition will take place at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Creed makes an over-the-top patriotic entrance into the ring, accompanied by James Brown playing "Living in America" and showgirls.
The fight begins tamely, with Creed landing several weak blows on Drago, but Drago quickly retaliates with deadly results. Rocky and Creed's trainer, Duke, beg him to halt the match at the conclusion of the first round, but Creed refuses and instructs Rocky not to stop it "no matter what". Drago continues to pound him in the second round, and Duke begs Rocky to give up. Rocky respects Creed's wishes, allowing Drago to beat him to death in the ring. In the aftermath, Drago shows no remorse, telling the gathering journalists, "If he dies, he dies."
