Publisher's Synopsis

An anthology of poems and prose presented by John McCarthy (who is Patron of the Foundation) for the benefit of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. Pieces range from well-known writers such as Brian Keenan, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Eric Lomax and Sheila Cassidy to unknown writers who are clients of the Medical Foundation. Countries include Iran, China, Rwanda and Chile. The themes of Loss, Identity, Impact, Bystanders, Survival and Exile are all covered in simple poetry and prose which stand as a moving testament to the strength and dignity of the human spirit. The Medical Foundation has a huge support from many people and was Waterstone's Charity of the Year 1998. The founder (and now director) of the Foundation, Helen Bamber, is the subject of a new book: The Good Listener Helen Bamber: A Life Against Cruelty by Neil Belton published earlier this month (Weidenfeld & Nicolson)
