Publisher's Synopsis
CAPTAIN BILLY'S WHIZ BANG is the most influential non-comic publication in the history of comics! Born out of World War I and the work of U.S. Army Captain Wilford Hamilton "Captain Billy" Fawcett, who wrote for the military paper Stars And Stripes. Once the war was over, Fawcett started this "men's humor magazine." Some of the humor today is dated, but much of it is funny and downright profound - it ages well! Sure, there's more than a little sexism, racism, and a bunch of other "--isms" that were acceptable more in the 1920s than today. CAPTAIN BILLY'S WHIZ BANG ran from 1919-1936, thriving through Prohibition and dying during the depression.
For comic readers, not only is the name Fawcett well known as one of the top publishers of the Golden Age, but Whiz Comics undoubtedly found its name from the earlier publication, and there is little question that Billy Batson is a namesake of Mr. Fawcett himself.
This first book collects four early BILLY'S: #11, 13, 16 & 17 (1920-1921).
