The book shows how the country developed from the time of the initial contact by European explorers with the Americas through the resolution of the rivalries between the European powers in what is now Canada. It then turns to the subsequent diplomatic challenges posed by an expanding United States of America and shows how boundary treaties shaped the country to arrive at the borders of Canada as it exists in the early twenty-first century.
