In 1670 Charles 11 issued the charter of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1783 the rival interests of Montreal merchants were reconciled in the founding of the north-west Company in 1811 the directors of the Hudson's Bay Company granted to Lord Selkirk for colonization purposes an area Of square miles. Widely separated as they were in time, and widely unrelated as they appeared in import, these three events released forces that shaped the destiny of Mani toba's first settlers. In the rivalry of the Hudson's Bay and north-west Companies or in the divergence of trading and colonizing interests are to be found the causes of most of the misfortunes that befell the pioneers of western civilization.
