Canaan's Fire

When Karen Saunders first regains consciousness after falling and hitting her head, she thinks she's been bucked off another horse while helping her father at her home in Kentucky. But then she remembers: her father's dead. And she's over a thousand miles from home lying at the bottom of a deep arroyo in the desert wilderness. Traveling cross-country on her horse Raven, she had tried to jump the arroyo in a frantic attempt to escape two men whose act of murder she had witnessed, and who had then left her for dead. With both her and her horse having injuries that prevent them from climbing out of the arroyo, and knowing the closest inhabitants are miles away, Karen desperately seeks a way of escape. Just as she begins to lose hope, she hears someone playing music. Both she and Raven are soon rescued by Joshua Canaan, a man who claims to be camping in a cave out in the middle of the desert for rest and recreation. Wary at first, Karen gradually comes to trust him. When one of the murderers discovers she's still alive, that trust intensifies when Canaan tells her the real reason he's in the desert. At least, it does until they are confronted by the killers...and he does absolutely nothing to protect her. Over the five days that Karen spends with Canaan, she finds herself intricately---and unknowingly---entwined in the lives of Canaan and her pursuers, learning lessons of love and forgiveness through a source she would never have thought possible!
